Immigration Report from Malta by Joe Pollitt

Migrants in Malta are seemingly, the property of Malta, fingerprinted on arrival, treated as criminals and then processed like cattle. After a year and half in the Detention Centres they enter a country that has little, if any, prospects for them. If the migrant tries to leave for other European countries they are deported and sent back. Their lives are no more valuable than slaves and their rights of movement denied. They have no chance to live in more respectable European countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Germany. From the minute they leave on boats from Tripoli heading for Malta the migrant is robbed daily. The USA containers full of clothes, shoes, suits is taken by the guards in the Detention Centres, who believe that this is just one of the perks of the job. After risking life and limb to enter Europe they find Malta equally, if not more, corrupt than the countries they have fled from.  Politicians with vested interests, double standards are blatantly acting as criminals. Here in Malta humanity is for sale. Aid workers quickly learn the ropes and benefit from the misery business. Here, in a country where Bankers are above European Laws and human decency is seen as a weakness, compassion a failure, it becomes abundantly clear that Malta is a country without a moral compass. Its beauty spoilt only by the greed of the few. The necessity to create Draconian Laws, as part of an ugly process, makes being an immigrant in Malta one of the worst places to be in the European Union.

Article 2 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights is noticeably being neglected because the sort of language in Malta today is reminiscent of that of racist London during the 1960's, where it was commonplace to see signs outside lodging houses clearly stating ‘No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish’. Here in Malta the landlords and ladies specifically state, NO LADS meaning ‘NO Libyans, Africans, Dogs or Somalians’. The migrants are seen as walking commodities but what is rightfully theirs has been denied them from the Maltese Government. They are owed millions of Euros, which where allotted for rents in social housing. Landlords and ladies are seeing the opportunity the Africans bring with supposed secured rents, but they are housing them in sub-standard accommodation and irresponsibly putting the migrants health at risk. The majority of the migrants feel stuck in a country that enjoys their Aid Agencies money but resents their African presence intensely to a point of unchecked, acts of civil disobedience and regular racially motivated hate crimes. Humans Rights are not being observed in this country and there are many issues that need to be resolved to make the newcomers gain a sense of security whilst stuck in the EU.

For many black people here in Malta, life is a living nightmare. Those that smile hide secrets of mistreatment and abuse. The same story is repeated over and over again. The Black Community feels so scared to speak out because so many people have been thrown into Maltese prisons. Those with businesses are so fearful of being attacked, their livelihoods taken away that they stay silent. The International Community is allowing this to take place and the Humanitarian Agencies are ignoring this reality and those that suffer the most are the Africans. There are Funds; set-up specifically to assist the migrants into social housing but this money is nowhere to be seen. This human experiment and social engineering is a complete disaster. The migrants are given 300 euros per month, their rents alone are 400 euros so it is simply not enough. In a country that is so willing to trade European citizenship selling passports to the Russians for over a million euros, they see the migrant workers simply as people to exploit. When refugees come to Europe they are integrated into the country with language classes and life skills, here in Malta they fake those classes, taking a bus-load of Africans, place them in a classroom and give them notepads and pencils to hold, then photograph them merely to claim the money from the EU. The Africans bring prosperity but not for themselves but more for those in Power. The Government is claiming to help the Africans but in reality they are just creating diversions in order to gain the European Union relief funds. The Social Workers are making appointments for their clients who have to wait 3 months. When the appointment comes up it is then moved another 3 months so many of the migrants have lost hope and hung themselves, many have been sent to Mount Carmel Hospital, the mental health unit here in Malta. Nothing here in Malta is being achieved except the exploitation of the most vulnerable and determined people on earth.

  3. I didn’t mention this because I thought it embarrassing for those that have gone through this experience. African and others are picked up by trucks just outside Tripoli and taken as Slaves in order to get their passage over to Europe. They are housed fed and taught Arabic. All these things seem so generous but the exploration remains the same. When I think about English people becoming homeless slavery seems quite a luxury. That really sounds terrible but that's the reality of life here in England. Maybe exploitation is the name of the game...sad as fuck to write that....

  4. I have not made myself clear. When you travel on a boat to Europe as a Refugee you are owned by the country you land in, which means you have access to European countries but only for 3 months, so if your family is in Sweden or Switzerland and you are a resident of Malta as a Refugee you can only see your family for 3 months and any longer you are deported back to your port of origin and to be deported from an European country means you will not be able to visit or see your family for at least 5 years. This is so painful just writing this..unbelievable for an European Citizen. Who is giving a fucking fuck here, nobody but us because we know!
